Infant + Toddler Teacher

Reports To: Head Teacher

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

 Under the direction of the head teacher, develops and implements individual educational plans for children, which helps them to develop socially, intellectually, physically, and emotionally in a manner appropriate to their stage of development. The teacher works collaboratively with the teacher assistants and volunteers by performing the following duties.

Duties and Responsibilities include the following.  Other duties may be assigned. 

  1. Implements approved curriculum in classroom.*
  2. Performs the functions of this position with a strong understanding of the performance standards of the school.*
  3. Performs the functions to adhere to the performance standards of the school.*
  4. Plans and implements learning experiences that promote all developmental areas including improving the readiness of children for school by developing their literacy, print, numeric awareness, and language-including English as a second language if applicable.*
  5. Guides and facilitates activities of the children including: daily activities, field trips, selecting, and arranging equipment and materials in the classroom.*
  6. Maintains a comprehensive and ongoing portfolio assessment for each child, including weekly observations in each area, examples of the child's work, and developmental assessment completed as per procedure.*
  7. Conducts at least one parent conference to discuss the child's individual development and progress, assist the parents in developing observational skills, and solicits parent observations.*
  8. Assists children in development of social and self-help skills, and sound nutritional practices.*
  9. Guides children's acquisition of academic and social skills.*
  10. Attends staff training, staff meetings, parent meetings, and special events inside/outside the school as requested.*
  11. Works with teacher assistants and volunteers to use and develop their skills and abilities in planning and carrying out classroom activities.*
  12. Maintains a safe and healthy classroom environment.*
  13. Assures that classroom equipment, furniture, materials, and supplies are properly maintained and stored.*
  14. Completes and submits required forms and records in a timely and accurate fashion, e.g., lesson plans, meal reports and etc.*
  15. Participates in the development and implementation of the teacher professional development plan.*
  16. Distributes newsletters, flyers, and other information to families as instructed by the head teacher or the executive director.*
  17. Assists teacher assistants to help to increase their professional knowledge and skills.*
  18. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Directly supervises three employees in the Teacher Assistants Department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Language Ability:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

Math Ability:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Computer Skills:

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of word processing software and spreadsheet software. 


  • A degree in early childhood education or child development (Bachelor's preferred); or
  •  An age-appropriate child development associate or state equivalent credential; or
  • An associate’s degree in a related field, such as family and  child studies, elementary education, with at least 18 credit hours in early childhood education; or
  •  A baccalaureate or advanced degree in any field, at least 18 credit hours in early childhood education, and experience teaching children in the age range for which she/he is applying for;
  • and have knowledge and experience in the philosophy and practices of child development programs, early childhood education, developmentally appropriate practice.

Specialized Training:

Must complete state required 20 hours of training annually
